This Article will show you how to install Memcache on CentOS

Before installing Memcache, you need to install it's dependencies first, you can use yum to install libevent.

yum install libevent libevent-devel

Now that the dependencies are in place, you can install memcache.

We want to make sure we are working from the src directory as the root user during this install.

cd /usr/local/src

Then, wget the latest version of memcache from your selected source, in this example with will use googlecode.com

wget http://memcached.org/files/memcached-1.4.21.tar.gz

Now we need to unpack the tar file and switch to the working directory you just created.

tar xvzf memcached-1.4.21.tar.gz

cd memcached-1.4.21

Now we need to configure the Makefile. You must have compiling tools on your server to accomplish this, if you don't you can install gcc and make using yum.

yum install gcc

yum install make

Now configure your Makefile. The preferred method is below:

After that complete, you can now start compiling memcache:

make && make install

Finally, start the daemon in the background

memcached -d -u nobody -m 512 -p 3452

There you go, you have successfully installed memcache and have it running in the background
